$250,000 bail for man accused of robbing
ShopKo pharmacy
Bail has been set for Stephen Carl Clayton, who
allegedly robbed Austin ShopKo pharmacy Tuesday morning.
Clayton of 303 Oak Street in Brownsdale appeared
before a Mower County Judge Friday. Bail was set at
$250,000, or $50,000 with conditions.
Clayton, 54, is facing one count of first degree
aggravated robbery, two counts of third degree controlled
substance crime, one count of second degree aggravated
robbery and one count of theft. All are felony charges.
His next appearance is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Nov.
16.
Charges against Clayton were filed Friday afternoon
by the Mower County Attorney's office.
Police arrested Clayton without incident around 6
p.m. Wednesday at a residence at 611 Ninth St. S.W.
Clayton had been free on a $25,000 bail bond for
a case filed in May that alleged he sold 10 pills
of Oxycontin, a prescription pain-reliever, to a police
informant May 11 in Austin.
He faces a felony count of third-degree drug crime
in that case; a pretrial hearing is set in January.
Around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, the ShopKo pharmacy in
northwest Austin reported a robbery in which the suspect
fled on foot with more than 200 tablets of Oxycodone.
The criminal complaint details the incident as follows:
An employee saw a man enter the west pharmacy door
and walk to the customer service counter.
When asked if he could be helped, he slid two notes
to the employee. One of the notes said "Draw
no attention, all your oxys, don't be a hero."
The second note had writing on both sides stating,
"Don't be a hero, draw no attention, all the
oxys now or someone gets hurt." The other side
of the note said, "Got a sawed off shot gun on
you, no one outdoors for 2 mn (minutes)."
The employee did not see what was under the man's
shirt but thought it was either a gun or a pipe. The
employee then placed six to eight bottles of Oxycodone
in a plastic ShopKo bag.
After the arrest, at 611 Ninth St. S.W., police found
a syringe, a small bundle of white powdery substance,
five pens, an address book, a memo pad similar to
those found at the crime scene and 11 white notebook
pages in Clayton's belongings.
At a search warrant at the Brownsdale address, police
found 121 tablets of Oxycontin.
